The photographs were evidence, not souvenirs. Someone else had been following me, and investigators were trying to identify him. My suitcase had been moved during the investigation, and several unfamiliar items had been discovered inside.
Although relieved, I was angry. Claire and Richard had tried to protect me without telling me what was happening. I reminded them that being 71 did not mean I had lost my independence. I deserved the truth and the right to make my own decisions.
The next morning, Claire apologized, and Richard gave me his phone number, promising there would be no more secrets. I eventually called him. Nine months later, we are still together, taking things slowly. I also strengthened my financial and online security. Whenever Richard raises his champagne glass now, I smile and say, “To full disclosure.” And he always answers, “To second chances.”
